The echinoids commonly known as sea potatoes or heart urchins. including 'dollars', all produce echinoplutei larvae, with characteristic lateral and ventral spines invariably tipped with red as if  murder had just been committed. These spicules are crystalline within and covered with a ciliated epithelium, some can be hinged through several degrees.
