This blue starfish is one of a number of sea stars on the reef flats, but because of its abundance and distinctive colour it is one of the easiest to see. It is often parasitized by small gastropod molluscs of the genera Stylifer and Thyca, which can be found by examining the underside and arms of the starfish. This individual was photographed in Verde in the Philippines but it is common throughout the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in areas with wave action.
