This species is the most common, and best known, of the six members of the genus Heniochus. It frequents coastal areas as well as offshore reef habitats. Growing to a length of 8 inches, it retains the basic juvenile colouration but the dorsal filament increases in length as the fish matures. The Longfin Bannerfish occurs alone, in pairs or in small aggregations and is easy to approach. It has been recorded fom New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia and New Guinea as wellas the entire Indo -Pacific.
